Doing Time in Marfa and Other Great Travel Deals

Bright Lights, Small City
Where do you go when allegedly skipping out on a hotel bill? Evidently you head to Marfa if you are Randy and Evi Quaid, that is. Maybe they just wanted to see the Marfa lights and were so enthralled with the idea that they allegedly forgot to pay their whole bill at the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara. Marfa is actually an artist colony near Big Bend in west Texas. The movie Giant was filmed in the area as was No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. The town is home to the artist Donald Judd and a really cool mid century motel makeover... check out the Thunderbird.
There are also some great B&B's, lofts and the El Paisano.
The Marfa Ballroom features great music and art and has a really cool jukebox feature . Of course it would, on the board of directors are people like Charles Attal from Austin...can you say Austin City Limits music festival?
Hey, seems to me they made a great choice of places to be "on the lam." (if that is what really was going on). All of this could be publicity, or as some are alledging a plot by their managers to steel their assets. Big doin's for little Marfa, Texas.
If you want to get to Marfa, the nearest airport is El Paso International airport about 190 miles west of Marfa or if you prefer a road trip like the Quaids just make sure you pay attention to your gas consumption. There are some stretches of road in the area with 200 miles between towns.

If other travel destinations are on your mind, here are this weeks best bets...

And In the End
No one can really explain the Marfa lights or why this thing with the Quaids is such big news, but it does continue to give the west Texas town added funk factor. I may have to get out there and check out Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation after I get back from the east coast and perhaps a quick run down to Austin for my fave festival, ACL . I'll keep you posted traveling friends and you do the same with me. We love comments and kudos here. Remember, life is a journey, stay packed. Ciao for now, maggie
