A quick note today traveling friends about conditions in Greece. A nationwide strike protesting government policies got violent on Tuesday. The strikers were private and public workers who are members of two large unions that represent roughly half of the nations 5 million workers according to CNN. In a few days the Greek Parliament is to debate the 2009 state budget and the union leaders are concerned about pension reform and tax collection. They vow to continue if the government persists and will intensify the struggle with more strikes according to Stathis Anestis, a spokesman for one of the unions. This concerns you because the strike halted airline, ferry, rail and mail services. Hospitals and utility companies operated only with a skeletal crew yesterday. If you are scheduled to fly into Greece or are planning a trip there you should most assuredly check with your airline to make sure they have not cancelled the flight and to see if you can make other arrangements. And now for a few more last minute grab them now deals...
