State Fair of Texas Week Two and Texas vs OU

Howdy Again Folks!
The State Fair of Texas has been open since last Friday September 28th and runs through October 21st. This weekend is the one you all hear about with the Texas-OU football game taking center stage, or as they now call it the Red River Rivalry. The Fair will be awash in orange and red as fans sport their teams colors. Tailgating Texas style (OK, Oklahoma style too) will begin early Saturday morning. I will be helping my friends at Oasis Fire (see previous posts) as the crowds are said to be incredible. It has been suggested that I leave my home by 7 AM Saturday just to park somewhere near the gate and avoid being stuck in traffic. We don't even open until 10am but I am choosing to believe them. Saturday is going to be a verrrrrrry long day, but it will be fun!

Fair Food
Since I worked several days this last week I have had an opportunity to sample some great stuff...and some not so great. The Tower building has the best food choices to satisfy a group. I can recommend the Gyros, the Greek Salad, the Seafood Gumbo, Helmut's Strudel and the Fajita Tacos. Stay away from the Jerk Chicken...the day I tried it, it was way greasy. Schepps Dairy has a booth in the Tower building where you can get milk and lemonade for cheaper than anywhere at the fair. In the Embarcadero building The Dock serves up Fernie's Funnel Cake and a Deep Fried Frito Burrito that I have not tried yet, but it is getting raves. On Nimitz Street is where you will find the Deep Fried Cookie Dough, the Fried Latte and Tornado Taters. Fletchers right by Big Tex is the place to go for the best Corny Dogs. Beer is everywhere and wine is easily located along with wine Margaritas and Sparkling Wine Bellinis. This year the Texas Wine garden is one of my favorite spots because you can sample wines from Texas and around the world and snack on healthy favorites including fruit and cheese, tomato basil mozzarella skewers in balsamic, granola and oatmeal cookies.

Loreal
Ladies, listen up. Loreal has a huge indoor area with coupons and samples of their products as well as mini make-overs and mini manicures and you can buy products as well...so if you need your look freshened up, and who doesn't when the temperatures are still in the mid 90's, that is the spot. If you time it right you can watch the human cannon ball and learn the art of Sand Castle sculpting before heading back to the Cotton Bowl or the Midway.
The ATT blue room is set up on Nimitz too so if you are dying to know the score of baseball playoffs or the Texas OU game (in case you don't have a ticket) they have the Jumbo trons. There are Jumbo Trons on the Chevy Mainstage and I would bet they will have the game showing when the music isn't playing as will the tricked out Chevy truck with the Plasma screen on the bed...now that is tailgating Texas style.

Need Cooling Off?
Head on into the Embarcadero for some A/C and some great shopping along with clean restrooms. Oasis Fire is displaying in the Embarcadero Building (in the corner closest to the restaurant Docks) for the run of the fair. Oasis Fire tables and chairs are also an integral part of Weisz Selection lawn and landscape's booth as well located just around the corner from Big Tex and across the street from The Old Mill Inn if you want to see an award winning landscaper's booth and sit for a spell.

Be sure to look for Oasis Fire tables in the Texas Wine Garden too!! If you can't come to Texas for the fair you can find more detailed info about the furniture line by clicking here.
I I'll keep blogging from the fair for the next several weeks and hope you will add your two cents too. I will continue to post deals as I find them on travel, because, well, I can't help myself...it is my obsessive hobby. For example...

And in the end

I love a parade, and of course every night the Kitchen Craft parade of lights sashey's through the Fair Grounds, This year's theme is the Lion King because, of course that is this year's state Fair Musical. Tickets are hard to come by at this point and I can't talk my daughter into going but maybe I can talk a friend into it...yes I am a sucker for Broadway too. Obviously for me travel isn't always on a plane. Travel is anything out of my normal day to day which causes me to interact with others or engage my mind. Life is too short, stay packed for the journey. Ciao for now, Maggie
